Terranova Steps Down as Wilkes Men's and Women's Tennis Head Coach
WILKES-BARRE – Wilkes University men's and women's tennis head coach Torr Terranova has announced he is stepping down from his position as coach of the Colonels after three years leading both programs.
Terranova will pursue new professional opportunities in his home state of Connecticut.
Terranova took charge of two programs that have dominated the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) and MAC Freedom in recent years and did not miss a beat in the 2018-19 campaign as the Colonels men earned their 12th consecutive MAC Freedom championship and won a first round NCAA Tournament match for the fifth consecutive season. The women's side collected its 13th consecutive MAC Freedom championship before falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to nationally ranked TCNJ.
In a shortened 2019-20 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Terranova mentored
Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) to just the program's second singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southeast Regional when she became the E Singles champion. Cieri and Laura Zielinski became the first Colonels duo in program history to win a double title at the ITA Southeast Regional by winning the C Doubles title.
This past season, Terranova led the women's team to its 14
th straight MAC Freedom crown followed by a win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament over Penn State Harrisburg.
Terranova fashioned a 33-7 mark as the women's head coach while leading the Colonel men to a 25-13 record over three seasons. He also coached five men's players who earned All-Conference honors including MAC Freedom Player of the Year Courtney Murphy in 2018-19. Six women's players earn All-Conference honors under his watch.
Wilkes has begun a national search to find its next tennis head coach.
