Wilkes Basketball Goes on Road To Compete in MAC Freedom Play Against DeSales Wednesday

WILKES-BARRE – The Wilkes University men's and women's basketball teams will compete in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) contests on Wednesday night as the Colonels travel on the road to take on DeSales University inside Billera Hall Gymnasium. The men's game opens the night at 6:00 p.m. with the women following at 8:00 p.m.

Men's Preview:
Wilkes comes into the contest with a 5-3 overall record and 1-0 in MAC Freedom play. Wilkes also enters the game going 2-2 on the road this season. The Colonels defeated Lebanon Valley College 97-56 at home to secure their third straight victory.
 
Drake Marshall (Gainesville, VA/Patriot) leads the Colonels in scoring to start the year with 14.4 points-per-game (ppg) which is good for eighth in the MAC Freedom. Trent Fisher (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) is averaging 11.1 ppg as he is currently 20th in the conference. Cayden Merrifield (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) with 8.9 ppg and Jack Argento (Hershey, PA/Hershey) with 7.0 ppg are third and fourth on the team in scoring.
 
Fisher is 12th in the conference with 6.4 rebounds-per-game (rpg) as he leads the Colonels. Marshall follows with 6.3 rpg which is 13th in the league. Joey Zvorsky (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) is averaging 5.2 rpg. Merrifield leads the team while tying for eighth in the MAC Freedom with 3.1 assists-per-game (apg).
 
Fisher is currently fourth in the conference with a .623 field goal percentage and ninth with 1.1 blocks-per-game (bpg). Zvorsky leads Wilkes with 13 steals, placing him sixth in the conference with 1.6 steals-per-game (spg), with Merrifield following behind averaging 1.5 spg as he has recorded 12 steals on the season. Matthew Prociak (Wilkes-Barre, PA/Holy Redeemer) leads Wilkes with a .500 three-point shooting percentage as he is 2-4 on the season, with Matthew Davidheiser (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) behind him averaging .478, going 11-for-23 from beyond the arc.
 
Wilkes is tied for fifth in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense with 70.0 ppg while ranking first in scoring defense at 59.4 ppg.
 
DeSales enters with a 5-2 overall record this season and at 2-0 in the conference. The Bulldogs are 2-2 at home. DeSales won their conference matchup against FDU-Florham on Saturday 74-49.
 
Elijah Eberly leads the Bulldogs with 12.7 ppg which puts him tied for 12th in the MAC Freedom. Jordan Holmqvist follows behind with 10.7 ppg while Ryan Boylan and Mason Barnes are tied for third on the team with 9.4 ppg.
 
Eberly with 8.6 and Boylan with 7.4 are sixth and eighth in the league currently in rebounding. Barnes leads DeSales and the MAC Freedom with 4.2 apg.
 
Eberly ranks fifth in the conference with a .576 field goal percentage and Holmqvist is currently seventh with a .444 three-point shooting percentage as he is 20-for-45 on the year. Eberly is tied for eighth in the MAC Freedom with 1.1 bpg while tying for team lead alongside Barnes with  1.0 spg.
 
DeSales is first in the MAC Freedom scoring 78.1 ppg and the Bulldogs rank second in scoring defense with 61.3 ppg.
 
The Bulldogs lead the series 21-8 dating back to the 2009-10 season, splitting both games last season against the Colonels. DeSales won the first matchup as they beat Wilkes 65-61 in the Marts Center while the Colonels got their victory on the road, defeating the Bulldogs 46-44.
 
Women's Preview:
Wilkes will compete in their second MAC Freedom game as they are 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the league. Wilkes is 1-0 on the road this season. The Colonels lost a close matchup to Neumann University 53-51 in their last game on Saturday.
 
Yamirelis Matos (Springfield, MA/Chicopee) leads the Colonels in scoring with 12.7 ppg which is eighth in the MAC Freedom. Brianna Horton (Verona, NJ/Verona) is second on the team and 23rd in the league with 8.4 ppg. Erin Shober (Reading, PA/Wilson) with 6.6 ppg and Julia Marino (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) with 6.4 are third and fourth in scoring for Wilkes.
 
Horton leads Wilkes with 5.6 rpg which is 15th in the conference. Matos follows with 5.1 rpg and Shober has 4.3. Marino leads the team with 3.0 apg which is third in the league with Matos following behind with 2.7, tied for ninth in the conference.
 
Matos leads the team with a .368 field goal percentage while Horton is second in the MAC Freedom with a .455 three-point percentage as she is 15-for-33 from behind the arc. Her 2.1 threes-per-game are fifth in the league. Shober is sixth in the conference with 1.1 bpg and Marino and Matos are eighth and ninth with 2.6 and 2.3 spg respectively. Marino is fifth in the league with a .800 free-throw percentage as she is 12-for-15 from the line while Brenna Babcock (Sweet Valley, PA/Northwest Area) is 15-20 from the line, placing her 10th in the MAC Freedom.
 
Wilkes is seventh in the MAC Freedom in scoring offense at 56.6 ppg and scoring defense at 63.1 ppg.
 
DeSales enters with a perfect 7-0 overall record to start the season, going 2-0 in the conference and is 4-0 at home. DeSales is ranked No. 16 in the country by D3hoops.com. In the Bulldogs last game, they beat FDU-Florham 113-32 on Saturday.
 
Megan Bealer leads DeSales in scoring with 12.9 ppg which is seventh in the conference. Mikaela Reese follows with 10.0 ppg, ranking her 10th in the MAC Freedom.
 
Reese is the team leader in rebounding with 7.3 rpg which places her ninth in the league. Bealer follows with 6.4 rpg. Grace Kelleher is tied for ninth in the MAC Freedom with 2.9 apg, with Lindsey Welsh placing 11th in the conference with 2.6 apg.
 
Bealer leads the MAC Freedom with a .530 field goal percentage while Amelia Saunders is third with a .407 three-point percentage. Reese is second in the league with 3.0 bpg while tying for second in the conference with fellow teammate Bealer with 3.3 spg.

DeSales leads the MAC Freedom in scoring offense with 78.1 ppg and scoring defense at 40.1 ppg.
 
DeSales leads the series with a perfect 27-0 dating back to the 2008-09 season including two victories over the Colonels last season.
