No. 2 Wilkes Women's Tennis set for 15th Consecutive MAC Freedom Final at No. 1 Stevens

WILKES-BARRE – The second-seeded Wilkes University women's tennis team is set to play in its 15th consecutive Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom (MAC Freedom) Final on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when the Colonels travel to face top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology inside the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J.

Admission to the match is free. Spectators in the viewing area are asked to wear a mask.

Wilkes looks to extend its current conference championship streak to 15 seasons in a rematch of the 2021 MAC Freedom Women's Tennis Final where the Colonels won 5-3. The Colonels earned the second seed after going 6-1 in their MAC Freedom matches this season and advanced to the Finals with a 5-3 Semifinal win over Misericordia University on Tuesday at the Ralston Athletic Complex. Wilkes is now 10-6 overall and are currently ranked eighth in the NCAA Division III Regional Rankings for Region III as of May 1st.

Stevens earned the No. 1 seed with a perfect 7-0 conference record and the Ducks are 10-4 overall. The Ducks defeated DeSales University 5-0 on Tuesday in their Semifinal match and are ranked sixth in the NCAA Division III Regional Rankings for Region III.

Stevens defeated Wilkes 5-1 at the Stevens Tennis Courts in Hoboken, N.J. in a match that began on April 9th and was completed on April 27th.

In that match Cassidy Greenman (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) and Dasha Yakhnis (Verona, NJ/Verona) won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles for Wilkes over Isabella Dona and Alexis Fuda. Agatha Malinowski and Audrey Heaberlin won No. 1 doubles 8-2 over Zoe Klein (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) and Alexa Cieri (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney). Polina Odintseva and Juliette Marchisio took an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles over Kaitlyn O'Neil (Jim Thorpe, PA/Jim Thorpe) and Tea Amerise (Mountain Top, PA/Holy Redeemer). Also completed on April 9th were two singles matches as Emma Eguia beat Abby Bielecki (Mountain Top, PA/Crestwood) 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 and Heaberlin beat Klein 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 as the Ducks led 4-1 at the suspension of the match.

When the Colonels returned to Stevens on April 27th the Ducks finished off the 5-1 win when Fuda defeated Amerise 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Yakhnis was leading at No. 1 singles 7-6, 1-1 over Malinowski and Greenman was leading 7-6 over Dona at No. 5. Odintseva was holding a 7-6, 3-1 lead over Cieri at No. 4.

The Colonels are 3-1 against Stevens dating back to the 2018 season. This year Wilkes has a combined 68-45 singles record and a 32-24 doubles record. The Ducks have combined to have a 67-30 singles record and a 38-12 doubles record.

The winner of the 2022 MAC Freedom Women's Tennis Team Championship will receive an NCAA automatic berth to the Division III Tournament, something the Colonels have done for the past 14 consecutive seasons.
